How We Evaluate Herbal Research
Not every scientific study provides the same level of evidence.
Whenever possible, La Planta Medicinal distinguishes between:
Traditional use — how an herb has historically been used in systems such as Ayurveda.
Laboratory research — experiments involving isolated cells or biochemical mechanisms.
Animal research — findings from animal models that may help researchers develop hypotheses but do not establish effects in humans.
Human observational research — studies that identify associations but cannot necessarily demonstrate cause and effect.
Human clinical trials — studies that directly investigate an intervention in people.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses — research that evaluates findings across multiple relevant studies.
A promising laboratory experiment does not automatically mean an herb produces the same effect in the human body. We try to make that distinction clear throughout our guides.
Whole Herb vs. Herbal Extract
The words whole herb and extract are sometimes used interchangeably, but they describe different preparations.
Whole-herb products generally use dried plant material that has been cleaned and milled into powder. Extracts use additional processing to concentrate particular soluble constituents or groups of compounds.
Neither approach is automatically better for every herb or every purpose.
Traditional preparation, concentration, extraction method, dosage, standardization, and the research supporting the particular preparation all matter.
Our Herbal Guide identifies the form of an herb used in important studies whenever that information is available so readers can better understand what the research actually tested.
Tradition Deserves Context. Science Deserves Accuracy.
Traditional herbal knowledge can provide valuable historical context, while modern research gives us tools to investigate those traditions scientifically.
The two should not be confused.
A traditional use is not automatically proof of a medical benefit, and an early laboratory finding is not the same as evidence from a well-designed human clinical trial.
